Open multiple instances of Project for side-by-side comparison
I want to be able to compare project plans side by side on multiple screens, similar to Word or Excel. This would require multiple instances of Project to be open at the same time (again, similar to Word or Excel).
Glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem but disappointed that such a simple fix hasn't been implemented.
Not having the capability to open a second (or third) instance of Project has bothered me for some time now. When I began using Projects several yeas ago, I just assumed it would have the multiple instance/different projects in place. MS had it for Word, then for Excel; it just made since that the other part of the Office Suite would have it. WRONG! What has to be done now is cumbersome and not intuitive to regular Office users, and having to use some other software is possible....but Project is ultimately responsible to its user.
MS you need to get behind this a support a large user base. Look at the comments, and Google it; you'll find plenty of objections to this issue. Early 2020 please?
Face it. Mircosoft simply doesn't care about MS project. Which is why for the most part it functionally hasn't changed in 30 years.
Microcoft, please bring Project up to speed with the rest of the world. Most Project Managers sitting in an office have 2 monitors. It is critical to be able to show 2 projects on different screens in order to compare plans.
Microsoft, please implement this change. It is very difficult to work on multiple schedules in a single window.
Fix it or it's back to P6 for me.

Please enable multiple instances of MS Project. This is a business application and a way behind.
If you have two monitors, just extend the screen - maximize MS project to take both screens, open both files and separate each project file on each screen!

This feature can make our life easier...
Read Edward Medri's workaround. It works. I only need the 2nd window so I can do quick cross-referencing between two project files. Opening one in IE is good enough for that type of work

You can download ProjectViewer (HOUSATONIC SOFTWARE INC.) in the Microsoft store and use that to open a second .MPP file in a separate window.
It is absurb that Excel has this feature and Project doesn't
Incredibly annoying that we still cannot do this. IT IS ALMOST 2020!! Microsoft, get your sh!t together and make it work.
Has anyone tried this solution: "Link projects to create a master project" - this seems to address the original issue and also provide a linkage between the subprojects & the master project.
The workaround given below by Mr. Medri did work for me, mostly. It opens the 2nd instance in MS Internet Explorer. The editing of this 2nd instance was more cumbersome, however, as internet explorer seemed to struggle a bit with it. Also, I could not get to any of the tabs in the 2nd instance. This solution seems ok for at least viewing a 2nd project while you work on another project.

WORK AROUND (MS Project 2016)
1) Open one project file with MS Project (double click on the *.MPP file)
2) Open second project file with Internet Explorer (right click on the *.MPP file and Open With)
--- A Dialog Box Message will pop up with following text,
"What do you want to do with filename.mpp?"
--- Select "Open".
--- Then the Internet Explorer window will have no content (blank page). It is OK.
--- Switch back to MS Project to view a new Dialog Box Message with the following text,
"Project Cannot Open the File".
VOILA ! !
You now have two separate windows, with two different filenames projects that are each editable and savable.
Note: When you save with new filename, it will create and save BUT does not display/update in the browser.

Why is this feature still not here? Who decided to make everyone life a living **** by not including this feature.
As long as this thread has been going on, it is clear that MS has no plan to make the life of everyone better or easier. So my company is looking for something better. Maybe if enough companies do this, they will fix this POS product.
use Project Plan 365 App; its an app for chrome
