The new agile features added to Project are good for planning. Key aspect of agile is communication in teammembers, so access to the plan/boards for team is very important.
It can be sufficient just display the boards in project site or in PWA.
We’ve heard your ask for boards, and we understand that its an important way to work.
We just launched the new Project, with a redesigned user experience that is simple and intuitive. Teams can quickly add new members and set up tasks, and then easily switch between grids, boards, or timeline (Gantt) charts to track progress.

Having the ability for my clients to go onto a web page, click and drag an item from one lane to another, without them ever knowing that SharePoint or MS project exist would be a huge delighted. Having them do it and me "approve" it on the back end without them ever knowing it would also be great. (I'm a huge fan of the SharePoint and MS Proj and Project Professional construct; most of my clients just get aggravated by it all so I end up making dynamic excel spreadsheets for everyone and don't tell them that everything is being done outside of excel. Excel is just their window into the "last best-known information" Everything you all can do to surface information to non Microsoft fanboys like myself ... make me a bigger fanboy.

Having task and issues (or more general "backlog items") in PWA would be great, but I think not in a Project Site (as a user you don't want to run through each site to find your items) but in central list like "Tasks" today. However they need to be accessible by a team and not a single individual.
Still I want to challenge if this really helps...the project leader wants to have her project schedule as simple as possible and NOT have it cluttered with 100s of small backlog items. Instead they want to plan at the level of sprints, epics and releases. THEN the team members should be able to create the cards (= backlog items) and assign them to the high level structure defined by the PM. in the schedule it would be nice (and enough) to see a rollup e.g. number of items per Project task or story points, planned and actual work etc.
Great news! I asked my colleagues who are more familiar than I am with competing Agile tools what was the #1 feature missing from Project Online that would enable it to be competitive, and most of them mentioned this feature.

I too was thinking that Planner would be the "Agile Boards".
However, if Planner cannot be the "front end" to MS Project, then Agile Boards will definitely be a huge help.
Each board would be a 1:1 tied to an MS Project task. It is just that boards would be exposed via internet PWA site vs. MS Project.
Would want the ability to expose certain MS Project fields and resource details within the Agile Boards. Would want people to enter their Notes, as well as timesheet type of information (daily hours completed, hours remaining, and estimated date of completion) for each of their cards (a.k.a. tasks).

We put in a request to push greater integration between Project Online and Planner because we have groups that use the visual method of managing their work through planner. The ability for these same groups to use PWA natively would be a huge benefit for us and may reduce the need for Planner to PWA and PWA to Planner integration.

Looking for Similar to Planner functionality.
If there were additional enterprise columns that could be used to categorize the user cards into categories (similar to what planner does with BAcklog, in process, done, etc..). Perhaps a customizable ones as well, just in case we have different categories or views (As planner does with buckets).
Also looking for the feature where users can view all their cards, and click on any of them to see the task details and be able to enter notes as well.
When users click on their card they can update their actual and/or remaining hours as well as their ETA on which day they will be done with the task (all of this moves to their timesheet automatically). MAny people prefer the card method to view and update vs. timesheet.
All of this would go directly to MS Project in the cloud, and then be reportable via the same powerful Power BI or MS Project reporting that is available today.
