Import mpp file into MS project Web
It would be great to have a Button to Import mpp file into MS project Web.
We usually use MS Project client (mpp file) to plan and monitor the project, and we can't even copy and paste MS fields to MS project web or upload the file directly. We have to replicate everything we have on the MS project Client by hand to MS project Web! That doesn't make sense at all!

Hi everyone!
Thank you for your feedback. For now, you can use an API through Powershell to import .mpp files in Project for the web. You can learn more here: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/project-blog/import-project-desktop-files-to-project-for-the-web-api/ba-p/2031298
We are also looking into other ways to support import. Stay tuned for future updates.

Why doesn't it work like all the other Microsoft apps where you open a project online? This is an ENORMOUS problem. I'm in the process of evaluating the tool against Smartsheet and at this point, I will have to go with SmartSheet which creates another entry point for our users. This really really needs to be fixed.

Of course importing/exporting mpp files is a must have. This is nearly the standard for exchanging project plans.
I was in the process of moving to project web when I discover that, so for this year I purchase an other solution... -

Importing a given mpp file into Project Web or to show a project from Project Online in Project Web are essential features. Somehow not reasonable why there are those fundamental gaps. Much simpler, if there is an Excel export function, why there is no Excel import for same format?

This is a pretty essential requirement, can you let us know if it has been committed to? We are looking at several hours of work rather than a few seconds. Please update as to when this will be included. Thank you.

We're just in the process of moving from 2016 to 365. I've been looking at the feature comparison of the Project options and thought the web sounded like it would cover our needs. But it completely misses out the fact that we can't open any existing programmes or the ones that we're sent.

We are trying to use everything MS, we use Office 365, Dynamics CE and F&O w/PSA module, Sharepoint, etc.
We would really love to drop Smartsheets, but don't see any way to easily migrate our existing 1,000's of smartsheets into Project for the Web. Am I missing something here? Anyone know how? Seems like if MS wants to get customers to switch from competing products they need to provide this functionality asap, no? -

Honestly quite disappointed with how much this has improved in a year, this is such a fundamental functionality.

I am befuddled that this is even a discussion topic. This should have been a feature from the very beginning.

have the ability to import existing project tasks (normal offline version), as well as the ability to sync / update the tasks so that they keep in sync.

"Would you be able to be successful managing your projects purely in the web? If not, why not? If you would still need the client, why?"
You really need to look at your competitors and thier feature sets. SmartSheet/Airtable allows import and export of mpp files, and are both far superior and better product.
Yes, this improves things. Who wants to manually re-write project plans in the web interface? No body. I may have a past project in the desktop that is a year old, and today get assigned a new project that is essentially the same. I can copy and paste the old project to a new project in the desktop, or save as and make changes, and in seconds be ready to go. I cannot do this in the web.

Project for web is clearly not anywhere close to what the Project Desktop app can do, but the ability to at least sync up the tasks that Project for Web can understand would give value to the PfW tool.
Also, ability to import some other list, like a "project plan" started in Excel would be a great feature to pull the "accidantal" PMs into PfW.

I adhere to this request! we just purchased MS Project Pro Plan 3 and have been creating our project plans in MS Project in the client (which we post to 365 sharepoint) but couldn't find a way to import them to Project online so we can make use of the group sharing feature. Recreating all of them in Project / Project online to share with a group would be a nightmare

Currently in the process of trying to convince a company that their product launch can completely be managed through the MS family of products with the new online 365 platforms. However, the issues we are currently experiencing as we attempt to move MS Project client files to the web based version is making it quite difficult. I am not sure how or why this is an afterthought and still currently stuck in the "thinking about it" bin. This is a possible 100 additional seats MS could sell of project if the functionality was already in place.

Would like to have more options in terms if dependencies not only Finish-Start.
Also for the timeline view you should be able to insert all the various rows you have in your grid view, to customize what is show on the left side of the Gantt chart... -

Why is it that every other web product Microsoft makes works alongside the desktop product other than this one (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio). What is there to think about? This should be table stakes.

What is the current status on this issue? I just opened the trial version and have files that I want to upload to both P4W and Project Pro Online. I need to know if I can do that or not and, if not, when will it be available... I have some small projects run by accidental managers and larger more complex projects run by full fledged project managers and need to demonstrate how this can replace Wrike and Trello...

Any type of import, even csv would be helpful. Migrating from PWA or even competing platforms makes this walled garden a very difficult pill to swallow.
