In the new Project for Web, allow users to customize email notifications about tasks which are assigned to them, have been updated, etc. Does not seem to be an option to do so, and it's critical for my team to be notified about their tasks.
We are starting work to enable native notifications in Project for the web. We will share updates as we have them.
You can also set up customized notifications through flows in Power Automate. We have published two templates you can use, and customize You can learn about them here: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/project-blog/new-flow-templates-for-project-for-the-web/ba-p/1384140
This seems possible with Flow - both in project and planner
Notifications via email to groups when tasks are updated by team members would be a more efficient way of communicating status updates, changes, and reassignments.
Also if there is a change of status or 'Bucket'.
We would like to add notification and powerBI for reporting

I agree with this idea. I believe that notifications should be customizable at the Project level, or Group level, so that the Project Manager can adjust their individual Projects notifications. This will allow team member and users to be aware of all updates to tasks, not just an assignment, but also any update to that task.

Task assignments, status, and important project events with Outlook and Teams notifications. This function is currently available in Planner as well as Project Online according to the Microsoft Project service description.

When a task is assigned to someone in Project for the web, there should be an email notification sent to the assignee.
